“Some people could be given an entire field of roses and only see the thorns in it. Others could be given a single weed and only see the wild flower in it. Perception is a key component to gratitude. And gratitude a key component to joy”

-Amy Weatherly

I was scrolling the ever-constant Facebook news feed the other morning and stumbled upon this quote. It was rather fitting has I was watching it pour rain outside for the hundredth time of the summer. More rain, more mud—I wanted to be frustrated about how tall my yard was getting, how muddy my horses pens were, how everything felt damp—but then, there it was a quote on perception and boom, the growth mindset part of me told myself to chillax. This too shall pass.

I got to thinking a little after that moment that I have honestly probably been both people in this example. I think it is human nature to sometimes be negative, or always see the risk over the reward in a situation. After all, it’s probably in our human DNA to be always be ready for danger. The brain has a funny way of trapping us into comfort that we often don’t want to step outside that zone to see the difference.

This summer for me has been full of outside my comfort zone moments. Thorns have definitely showed up and tested me to my very core. But, you know what they also did? They woke me up. Made me realize that things are probably never going to “stay the same” and that we have to be prepared at any moment for the variables to change. We have two choices when this occurs—be resistant, and bitter to the change (be a thorn) or be flexible and welcome the new (be a wildflower).

Ironically, I had gone shopping the other day and bought a shirt that I kid you not—says “wild” flower on it, so I decided God was yet giving me another sign that I indeed needed to be the latter person in this quote from here on out.

Perception is how we take in, see, believe how a situation goes, is going or went. I am a total believer in self-fulfilling prophecy and have seen it work first hand. If you tell yourself you can’t, you probably won’t because your mind is telling yourself that you can’t. It goes full circle. But just the opposite also can occur if you tell yourself you can, you probably will, because you will be doing things to make sure you do. I know that’s a mindful. But bear with me…

The funny thing is, when you take on the wildflower finding mindset, you begin to realize how much negative thorn mindsets there really are in the world, and let me tell you, being a wildflower is often a lonely place to be. Remember, misery loves company, and we are often the key factor in keeping ourselves miserable. #TruthBomb

Don’t be that to yourself. You owe it to yourself to have a positive mindset, and find the flowers in the weeds and go after what you want in this world. It’s probably going to require you to change some things, stick to some tasks, maybe ask for help, and maybe even have a few hang ups along the way, but I promise when you accomplish said task you will know you were better for it and overcame. So here’s my Monday motivation—be a wildflower in the weeds. Find the positive in the frustrating times and allow these learning moments to make you better not bitter.

Happy Monday!

Xoxo,

Hannah Lou
